Colbert, Jean-Baptiste
(29 ago. 1619, Reims, Francia–6 sep. 1683, París).

Estadista francés. Fue recomendado a Luis XIV por el cardenal Julio Mazarino, de quien había sido asistente personal. Tramó la caída de Nicolas Fouquet y de ahí en adelante sirvió al rey tanto en sus asuntos privados como en la administración del reino. Como director general de finanzas desde 1665, puso orden en las operaciones financieras, reformó el caótico sistema de impuestos y reorganizó la industria y el comercio. Como secretario de Estado para la marina desde 1668, se propuso convertir a Francia en una gran potencia marítima. Fomentó la emigración a Canadá y luchó por acrecentar el poderío francés y la fama del país en el terreno artístico. Aunque una serie de guerras impidió llevar a cabo todas sus reformas, el fortalecimiento de la monarquía y el mejoramiento de la administración pública y la economía del país ayudaron a hacer de Francia la potencia dominante en Europa.
